About the role

The Sales Representative will sell all Macmillan Learning solutions across assigned accounts in the San Francisco/Bay Area, CA territory. The primary objective is to promote Macmillan Learning products—including textbooks, references, software, websites, or study aids—as required or suggested materials for courses where Macmillan products are appropriate. This role involves daily in-person, on-campus sales calls with college faculty, administrators, and technology staff, along with detailed follow-up. The position is based in the San Francisco/Bay Area, CA, and requires the incumbent to live within the area.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to local college campuses to sell educational software products to faculty (up to 25% overnight travel during peak season, depending on location in the Bay Area).
  • Develop strong relationships with new and existing customers by demonstrating products, recommending solutions, and providing service and support.
  • Collaborate with your Regional Manager, regional product specialists, and marketing and editorial teams to drive sales of all existing products.
  • Coordinate onboarding and training for digital products, act as the point person for ongoing training and support, complete First Day of Class presentations, and escalate customer support cases as needed.
  • Use Salesforce and Slack Elevate to plan campus days, log sales calls, complete sales activities, and maintain an accurate database of relevant information.
  • Attend and actively participate in company meetings.
  • Manage the expense budget allocated for job-related responsibilities.
  • Provide feedback on competition, market trends, and market reaction to our products.
  • Manage a heavy influx of emails on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a sales team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to thrive in a self-starting environment.
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in working in an academic environment.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and results-focused.
  • Proficiency with using technology and basic applications software.
  • Comfortable presenting technology to individual instructors as well as larger groups.
  • Valid driver’s license with daily travel within the territory, including some overnight trips and the ability to drive for long periods (up to 5 hours).
  • Ability to travel for national and regional sales meetings (5 or more days).
  • Willingness to work more than 40 hours per week during fall and spring selling seasons.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct outside sales experience.
  • Publishing or Higher Ed experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative sales strategies that increase customer engagement, digital adoption, and long-term account growth.
  • Passion for emerging educational technologies, including AI-powered learning tools, digital courseware, learning analytics, and classroom engagement solutions.
  • Experience leveraging AI-powered productivity tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini) to prepare customer communications, research accounts, personalize presentations, or improve workflow efficiency.

Physical Requirements

This position requires periods of close concentration, the ability to multitask, and the capacity to sit or stand for long periods at conventions. The role also requires the ability to concentrate in noisy or busy environments.

Pay

Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000/year. Exemption Status: Exempt.
