About the Role
This position is responsible for transporting students and ensuring safety across Akron Public Schools (APS) facilities and events. Employees in this role exercise a high level of judgment and tact while working with staff, students, and visitors.
Responsibilities
- Safely transport families, students, or staff to designated locations in support of district programs and services.
- Monitor student behavior on school buses, in halls during class changes, lunch, and dismissal to support a positive educational environment.
- Provide mobile safety support at off-site events (e.g., athletic events, field trips, community gatherings) where APS students are present.
- Monitor school parking lots, grounds, and common areas to maintain a safe, orderly, and affirming school environment.
- Report violations of the Code of Student Behavior or building rules to administrators.
- Assist in locker searches, building searches, and monitoring visitors to ensure proper access and sign-in procedures.
- Conduct regular patrols and respond to incidents across multiple school sites and district facilities using a district-issued vehicle.
- Maintain accurate travel logs and follow all district protocols related to vehicle use and student transport.
- Collaborate with APS staff, students, families, and community partners to promote a safe and welcoming environment.
- Demonstrate exceptional customer service in high-pressure or sensitive situations.
- Exhibit sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when responding to safety-related concerns.
- Remain flexible and responsive to rapidly changing assignments, including last-minute driving requests or safety deployments.
- Ensure compliance with all district safety policies, transportation regulations, and student confidentiality requirements.
- Assist Safety and Security and building administration with specific or anticipated security problems involving students, parents, visitors, or intruders.
- Work with APD, SROs, Student Services, building counselors, and administrators to maintain a safe and affirming educational program.
- Perform surveillance inside or outside as deemed necessary by the building principal.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal, supervisor, or Director of Safety and Security to maintain a safe environment.
- Interact with parents regarding student absences or behavioral concerns.
- Promote positive participation opportunities for students during the school day.
- Assist in refocusing and restoring student attention to classroom, school, and district rules.
- Support the transition of students from alternative programs into regular classrooms.
- Identify and communicate student needs to building personnel and referral sources.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Satisfactory completion of a Bureau of Criminal Investigation background check.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License with fewer than 6 points.
Qualifications
- High degree of physical stamina to perform job demands, including frequent climbing (e.g., bus steps) and occasional restraint.
- Ability to drive for extended periods during assigned shifts to support district-wide safety and operational needs.
- Tact and good judgment in interactions with diverse populations.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Strong active listening, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
Pay
$18.79 - $25.98 per hour.
