Safety Specialist
Our client is an established environmental services organization supporting the power generation industry through large-scale construction, remediation, ash management, landfill, and site services. Their teams operate in complex, heavy industrial environments where safety is central to everything we do.
About the role
We are seeking a hands-on Safety Specialist to support a heavy civil/environmental operation in Maysville, KY. This is not a desk-based EHS position. You will spend significant time in the field working alongside site leadership and crews operating heavy equipment in construction, excavation, landfill, and environmental operations.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field safety inspections, observations, and audits
- Identify unsafe behaviors and conditions and drive corrective actions through completion
- Perform Job Hazard Analyses and develop appropriate mitigation strategies
- Lead comprehensive incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis
- Develop and maintain site-specific safety reports, documentation, and tracking
- Lead daily safety meetings with field teams
- Coordinate new-hire orientations and required safety training
- Support OSHA 10, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, First Aid/CPR, and other task-specific training
- Maintain required site safety records and inspection documentation
- Partner with corporate safety leadership on site-specific Safety and Health Plans
- Work directly with customer safety representatives and participate in customer meetings
- Support workers' compensation case management and return-to-work coordination
- Inspect facilities, heavy equipment, and work areas to identify potential hazards
- Provide weekly reporting on safety activities, observations, trends, and corrective actions
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required
- 5+ years of safety, EHS, or compliance experience
- OSHA 510 certification
- Strong knowledge of OSHA 1926 construction standards
- Experience working around heavy equipment and excavation activities
- Construction or heavy civil experience strongly preferred
- Experience in waste, landfill, ash management, environmental remediation, utilities, mining, or similar environments is a plus
- Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate reporting and documentation systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees, leadership, and customers
- High level of integrity, accountability, and dependability
- CSP, ASP, OHST, or CHST certification is a plus
- Valid driver's license
Pay
$95,000 - $105,000 per year, plus 10% annual bonus and $725/month vehicle allowance. Relocation assistance available.
Schedule
This position operates on a 4-days-on / 4-days-off schedule. Shift lengths vary based on site activity and may range from approximately 8–16 hours. During peak summer and winter periods, days typically average around 12 hours.
Work Environment
This is an active field environment involving construction and heavy equipment operations. Candidates should be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, around dust, noise, changing weather conditions, and active job sites. The role requires the ability to walk and stand for extended periods, climb, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds. PPE will be provided. A reliable personal vehicle is required due to travel between active work areas and landfill/cleanup sites.
