SAFETY SPECIALIST
About the Role
This professional position leads the development and implementation of occupational safety and health, and process safety management practices, policies, and procedures. The role coordinates all aspects of safety training and field verification, assists with conceptual design and project engineering/management of safety and health-related capital and expense projects (including fire detection and suppression systems, vapor detection and monitoring systems, and mitigation systems), and interfaces with operations, maintenance, projects, and contractor personnel on complex safety issues. The incumbent serves as the emergency response coordinator, tracking training, scheduling drills, and assisting with recruitment for medical, rescue, and hazmat teams, while actively participating in at least two of these teams.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Manager of Safety & Process Safety in reviewing, revising, and implementing company Safety and Health policies, procedures, and systems to promote worker safety and health.
- Collect, analyze, review, and maintain safety-related records (e.g., LOTO records, Confined Space Permits) and prepare reports as requested.
- Coordinate health initiatives, including industrial hygiene monitoring, audiograms, and respiratory fit testing.
- Develop and implement employee safety training guides and materials, and train new hires, contractors, and site personnel.
- Provide leadership in continuous improvement for the facility, including participation in the Safety Working Group and the Safety Strong Initiative.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets in the online application and backup paper files.
- Ensure accurate completion of OSHA Forms 300, 300A, and 301 (Recordable Case Log & forms).
- Identify health and safety issues and develop problem-solving strategies.
- Support emergency response team activities for medical rescue and hazmat teams.
- Conduct internal audits and field verification inspections for general health and safety, and process safety management programs, working with management and employees on hazard abatement.
- Assist with the implementation of the Facility Security Plan, including periodic inspections.
- Support the Facility’s Radiation Safety Program as needed.
- Interface with the Contractor Safety Program, including auditing contractor safe work practices, verifying training/certification, and ensuring compliance with facility and field rules, as well as the ISNet World program.
- Drive proper incident and near-miss reporting and investigations for all health and safety incidents.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- Regularly communicate and collaborate with supervisors on progress, concerns, and questions.
- Build team relationships by maintaining a high level of field presence and positively influencing plant safety culture.
- Assist the Safety Manager in medical case management for worker injuries and illnesses.
- Manage plant gas detection equipment and ensure instruments are maintained and serviced by contractors as appropriate.
- Work with the PSM Specialist in managing the PSM program and conducting process safety reviews.
- Provide after-hours and turnaround (12-hour shift) support as needed.
- Work near potentially volatile and combustible materials and chemicals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety or related field. Related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Professional Health and/or Safety certification preferred.
- 5+ years of safety experience or equivalent plant safety experience. 8+ years of related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Knowledge of safe work permitting, hazard assessments, and job safety analyses.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulatory standards.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions as needed.
- Fluent in English (oral and written).
- Ability to adjust schedule to meet business needs.
