About the Role

The Safety Specialist reviews and implements the company safety program to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment on assigned projects. The role involves developing, implementing, and administering job safety and health training programs, as well as providing input for jobsite safety meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Aid project teams in establishing the Jobsite Specific Safety Program.
  • Participate and facilitate safety pre-planning for assigned projects.
  • Coach workforce on proper safety procedures and processes.
  • Perform jobsite audits and incident investigations on assigned projects.
  • Network with local safety groups/associations.
  • Assess training needs based on jobsite conditions, issues, and trends.
  • Provide safety solutions to technical safety challenges in the field.
  • Participate in corporate/department training initiatives by presenting or co-presenting training to operations employees.
  • Deliver health and safety programs to train employees in worksite safety practices, fostering a culture where safety is a core value.
  • Collaborate with employees to identify and implement solutions to safety issues from inspections and investigations.
  • Review incident and injury reporting, analyzing data to identify trends.
  • Lead thorough investigations of all incidents in coordination with site leadership.
  • Foster a culture of accountability to prevent at-risk behaviors.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance audits, inspections, and associated record-keeping.
  • Develop and manage relationships at all levels, including projects, site leadership, corporate office, clients, subcontractors, and regulatory entities.
  • Maintain a consistent presence on-site with timely responses to safety questions or issues.
  • Work with site management teams on job site safety planning, including maintaining site-wide safety programs and policies.
  • Participate in safety meetings and coordinate/administer safety orientations for new personnel.
  • Ensure timely investigations, inspections, and reporting of safety matters.
  • Conduct weekly site safety inspections, trend identification, and correction.
  • Maintain records, reports, and documents to meet company or regulatory requirements.
  • Report all incidents to the Safety Director and assist in taking individuals to clinics.
  • Lead comprehensive incident investigations and assist with company-wide lessons learned.
  • Facilitate training programs focusing on site-specific needs, including new hire training, fall protection, and equipment training.
  • Coordinate with operations to schedule training and refresher training.
  • Assist in developing and implementing training materials and safety toolbox talks.
  • Mentor site staff and co-ops, providing support during new hire onboarding.
  • Run training reports and assist with managing and tracking training records.
  • Provide safety expertise to ensure consistency in safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure emergency response systems, policies, and procedures are in place.
  • Communicate effectively with regulatory agencies/customers to resolve compliance issues.
  • Provide data analysis, regulatory interpretations, and guidance on safety and health policies.
  • Partner with site staff to interpret, evaluate, and provide technical guidance on internal safety requirements and accident investigations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health/Safety (preferred) or a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a safety role.
  • OSHA 30 certification (preferred).
  • Safety certifications (e.g., GSP, CHST, OHST, ASP, CSP) are preferred but not required.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Adept at handling difficult decision-making and follow-through.
  • Technical working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Practical experience in employee safety training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
