Safety Specialist

About the role

The Field Safety Specialist I works as a leader in the safety department under the direction of the Director of Safety and Health. This entry-level position provides technical safety expertise by consulting with supported lines of business and performing observations and assessments. The role makes recommendations and provides guidance on safe work practices to improve safety culture and performance. After a review period, the specialist may guide and consult 10-35 field employees daily to ensure safe work practices.

Responsibilities

• Determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards using relevant information and individual judgment.
• Provide consistent, technical, and practical interpretation of regulations, procedures, and standards.
• Collaborate with the operations team to implement strategies that support work execution and controls.
• Identify, propose, and execute corrective action plans to eliminate safety risks and exposures.
• Create sustainable safety culture, conditions, and practices.
• Partner with other safety professionals to provide insight and coaching in developing correction plans.
• Participate in, facilitate, and conduct incident/accident investigations; suggest improvement opportunities.
• Ensure identified corrective actions are executed and implemented.
• Identify training needs, develop training programs, and instruct others in accordance with OSHA/DOT/state regulations.
• Assume duties of the Project Safety Manager or Director as needed.
• Build productive relationships with field employees, supervisors, managers, and senior leaders to strengthen safety leadership and practices.
• Engage with employees and leaders to increase safe behaviors, rule adherence, and hazard identification.
• Partner with other safety specialists for escalation processes and lead briefings with senior leaders.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify causes of errors or defects.
• Perform daily safety observations with face-to-face interaction.
• Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• Proficient in OSHA recordkeeping.

• Solid mathematical skills.

• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
• Documented training and experience to satisfy qualifications.
• Ability to attain or hold CPR/First Aid or EMT certification.
• On-the-job experience managing a project safety program and training experience.
• Certification as an OSHA, MSHA, or Medic First Aid instructor preferred.
• OSHA 10 HR and 30 HR or equivalent instructor certification.
• Ability to attain CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional) prior to advancing to the next career level.
• 3-5 years of work experience in transmission power line construction preferred.
• BA/BS in Health and Safety or related field strongly preferred.
• Ability to attain CSP (Certified Safety Professional).
• Journeyman lineman or certified high-voltage electrician experience.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 and recordkeeping.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.

Pay

Salary range: $95,000–$130,000, plus per diem, company vehicle, and gas card.
