Safety Specialist

Responsibilities

  • Promote a safe workplace without risk to health
  • Ensure the workplace satisfies health and safety requirements
  • Proactively prevent and precautions against, or adequate control of, exposure to hazardous substances, and danger from flammable, explosive, electrical, noise, radiation and manual handling risks
  • Investigate accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventable measures
  • Report or review findings from accident investigations and facilities inspections
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
  • Work with the Safety Manager to conduct or coordinate worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment
  • Interview employers and employees to obtain information about work environments and workplace incidents
  • Communicate safety policies with customers
  • Act as safety resource contact for site managers on multiple projects / jobs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A valid driver’s license required
  • A high school diploma or equivalent required
  • A bachelor’s degree in safety related program preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience in safety and/or compliance functions required
  • Prior experience in ash management, waste, civil-type construction or related environment preferred
  • An OSHA 510 certification required
  • A familiarity with OSHA 1926 standards and requirements
  • A working knowledge of heavy equipment and excavation safety
  • A knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions
  • An experience with Microsoft Office Suite required

Position Requirements

  • Ability to use electronic equipment such as computer, cell phone and handheld radio for communication with supervisors and co-workers
  • A flexible work schedule: nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to climb, maintain body equilibrium, reach, grasp, bend and walk/stand/sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to hear and see naturally or with correction
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Subject to loud noises
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions - one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odor, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
  • This position requires working in the internal and external environment
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints in a changing environment
  • Effective communication skills
