Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for the range. Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

About the role

This position actively maintains a safe, secure, and pleasant environment for Library visitors and staff through the enforcement of Library rules, keeping in mind the Library's goal of access for all and equal treatment of all.

Responsibilities

  • Make frequent visits through the entire facility to ensure safety and security.
  • Engage with patrons and staff in a positive, effective manner.
  • Close and secure the Main Library; may close and secure the Branch Libraries.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies.
  • Defuse conflicts among patrons.
  • Contact Police as needed, including filing complaints and making court appearances.
  • Write reports and gather information that may be used in a court of law to prosecute offenders.
  • Set up meeting rooms and empty book drops as needed.
  • Provide support to the Library's Maintenance staff as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all staff and visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years or more of public safety or social work experience.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Law enforcement experience desired.
  • Ability to effectively deescalate a wide variety of conflicts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, comfortably, and intelligibly in person, on the phone, and online.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations involving all American monetary units.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff.
  • Ability to multitask many variable duties, requests, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret manuals, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, journals, memos, letters, reports, and legal documents.

Physical requirements

  • Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and moving heavy objects, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and stripping floors.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to lift chairs and tables, and deliver heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors, occasionally, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures, and humidity.
  • Frequently exposed to cleaning chemicals, odors, dust, and dirt.

Pay

$23.394 - $29.971 per hour, 37.5 hours per week.

Supervision

Under the supervision of the Library Safety Manager, work is performed with the guidance of managerial staff. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/staff requests. The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks and identifying appropriate resources to resolve problems or situations. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences, and meetings, and is evaluated at least annually.
