About the role
To provide for the safety of the school district environment through observation, prevention, assistance and resolution of potential conflicts.
Responsibilities
- Observe students' verbal and physical actions to ensure a safe, orderly environment in all areas of the school including hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, exterior areas, in the gym, and cafeteria, during arrival and after dismissal and in other areas where groups of students assemble.
- Patrol assigned areas in accordance with established procedures and training.
- Ensure the health and safety of students by following and enforcing established school health, safety and conduct rules.
- Act proactively to prevent conflicts or concerns from developing.
- Resolve minor student confrontations in a timely and effective manner.
- Refer safety issues and more serious misconduct to designated teacher or administrator for discipline support.
- De-escalate student conflicts and manage student behavior.
- Intervene proactively with students, consistent with school policies and practices and ensuring compliance with individualized education programs and Section 504 plans.
- Follow procedures for reporting and assessing student injuries.
- Ensure student behavior toward staff and other students is appropriate.
- Encourage and promote courtesy and guide students in developing positive relationships.
- Use positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior.
- Maintain order in classrooms, library, and gymnasiums and on school grounds by removing students in the event of unruly behavior(s).
- Utilize Safe Crisis Management when appropriate.
- Check lavatories, hallways, stairwells, parking lots, exterior perimeter of buildings and other specific locations throughout the building and grounds on a regular basis to ensure doors, windows and parking areas are secure.
- Direct students and visitors, ensuring all visitors are registered and issued a pass.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and peaceful school environment by patrolling school grounds and halls to check for vandalism, illegal activity and hazardous or dangerous conditions.
- Check student attendance information with office and search for students who are on campus but not in assigned class.
- Confirm that any student who is not in class has a properly authorized hall pass.
- Report students without a hall pass who are suspected of skipping class to designated individual.
- Assist supervisor as assigned with investigations into safety, residency and student discipline issues, prepare incident reports in accordance with policy and procedures and testify in Court or disciplinary hearings when necessary.
- Familiarize self with and use district computers and software as needed in completing investigations and reports.
- Control traffic while school buses are arriving and departing.
- Treat all students in a fair, impartial and respectful manner.
- Communicate in a calm, neutral and non-confrontational manner speaking at an appropriate volume and choice of words.
- Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Keep current with District safety plans, policies, school rules for students and employees and procedures.
- Interact with other monitors to ensure consistency in compliance.
- Report any repetitive compliance concerns to supervisor.
- When working with students with disabilities, comply with the provisions of the individualized education program or Section 504 plan.
- Use all appropriate equipment to include radio communication devices, video surveillance/cameras, cones, barricades, wands, metal detectors and other security equipment.
- Perform and pass all necessary yearly training to include NASRO, Safe Crisis Management, CPR/AED, Active Shooter, All Hazards Plans, Child Abuse, Mandated Reporting & all other required Safe Schools Trainings.
- Assist with preparation for drills such as fire, lock down, emergency evacuations and additional Hazard plans.
- Provide crisis prevention and intervention where appropriate.
- Prepare and maintain routine event records and daily and weekly logs in accordance with District policies and procedures.
- May participate in escorting or transporting assigned students between classes, within the school, on the grounds or to other areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with school policy, administrative regulations, state and federal laws.
- Perform all duties listed above at athletic & after school events.
