Safety & Health Inspector, White Plains (NY HELPS)

This position within the Division of Safety & Health (DOSH) involves planning, scheduling, and conducting safety and health inspections at various work sites, including state, county, city, and town offices, places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs, amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, window-washing operations, and asbestos abatement projects. The role ensures compliance with established standards, identifies unsafe conditions, and protects workers and the public.

Responsibilities

• Conduct safety and health inspections to ensure conformance with established standards and identify unsafe conditions or work practices.
• Travel for training purposes, including multiple days/nights, not to exceed one week at a time.

Requirements

• Five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations, or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs.
• Five years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in manufacturing or construction, active-duty military, or fire protection, including responsibility for enforcing safety standards and procedures.
• Five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.
• Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and access to a motor vehicle to meet transportation needs.
• Willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
• Ability to travel for training, including multiple days/nights, not to exceed one week at a time.

Qualifications

Substitution: An Associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; a Bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years; a Master’s degree may substitute for five years of specialized experience. Your degree must be awarded by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If awarded outside the U.S., independent verification of equivalency is required.

NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications: Employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status in the future without needing to compete in an examination, affording the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees.

Reassignment Qualifications: Current Department of Labor employees with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Safety & Health Inspector role. If less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Safety & Health Inspector eligible list for this location.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications: One year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Grade 12 or higher, determined to be similar by Civil Service.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
