This position is within the Division of Safety & Health (DOSH).

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and conduct safety & health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices, places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs, amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations, including asbestos abatement projects.
  • Assure conformance with established standards, identify unsafe conditions and work practices, and protect workers and the public.
  • Travel multiple days/nights for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time.
  • Participate in organizational transformations to ensure successful adoption and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Leverage emerging technologies to optimize processes and enhance customer experiences.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs.
  • OR five years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade.
  • OR five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.
  • As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Qualifications

Substitution: Associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; bachelor's degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience; master's degree may substitute for five years of specialized experience. Your degree must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.

NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications: It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Reassignment Qualifications: Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Safety & Health Inspector role. If you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Safety & Health Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications: One year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Grade 12 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Additional Information

  • This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.
  • Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment, with the appointee responsible for the clinical laboratory test fee. Periodic medical examinations may also be required to reassess ability to perform essential duties.
  • Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
  • Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview. Eligible employees may telecommute up to 2 days per regular work-week, not to exceed 4 days per two-week pay period.
