Safety Coordinator (Part-time)

About the role

The Safety Coordinator provides an on-site presence for all Rimrock facilities during varied hours to deter criminal activity, serve as support personnel in emergent situations, monitor and control access to facilities as needed, and document incidents. The role educates and enforces safety policies and procedures, ensures adherence to state statutes, CARF standards, and federal regulations (including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2), and positively represents Rimrock’s mission to the community.

Responsibilities

• Provide a physical presence at Rimrock facilities by making routine rounds to assess and ensure a safe environment for employees and clients.
• Monitor video surveillance and respond to suspicious activity; communicate with staff via telephone and walkie-talkie.
• Ensure doors are locked, alarms are set after hours, and identify opportunities to minimize workplace injuries or health concerns.
• Support the Safety Manager during training or drills and monitor off-site facilities during overnight shifts.
• Accompany employees to vehicles before or after shifts if needed.
• Report all incidents, unusual events, and emergencies immediately to supervisors and the nurse on duty.
• Provide a daily activity update to incoming personnel at shift completion.
• Intervene and de-escalate situations at the Main Facility and off-site locations; report behavioral issues to the clinical care team.
• Oversee visitor access to Rimrock facilities during scheduled shifts.
• Perform daily luggage searches and transport luggage to storage areas.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings, in-services, and safety trainings.
• Follow guidelines under the code of conduct in the employee handbook.
• Monitor and accompany clients during nicotine breaks outside the facility when needed.
• Conduct safety sweeps of external locations before clients exit the building.
• Maintain regular, predictable, and reliable attendance.
• Secure areas during incidents to limit unnecessary traffic and distraction.
• Provide education and enforcement of Rimrock safety policies and procedures.
• Authorize access to facilities overnight and escort emergency personnel (fire, police, ambulance).
• Assist in emergency procedures or drills and provide basic first aid when necessary.
• Monitor video surveillance of all Rimrock facilities with overnight activity and respond as needed or contact 911.
• Complete incident reports regarding suspicious behavior, property damage, contraband, or emergencies.
• Ensure inpatient clients are accounted for and secure within the building; document checks in the comm log and My Evolve.
• Perform routine luggage searches and transport client belongings to appropriate departments.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Knowledge, skills, and abilities to communicate and work with patients with addictions.
• Prior safety experience required.
• Valid driver’s license required; must be insurable under Rimrock’s driving policy (no more than 2 violations/accidents or suspensions/reinstatements within 3 years; no DUI/Reckless/Felony driving convictions within 5 years).
• Valid Montana Security Officer license preferred.
• CPR and First Aid training certification.

Skills

• Strong communication and ability to take direction while working collaboratively with the therapeutic team.
• Empathy and knowledge of patients with addiction; ability to implement positive reinforcement.
• Ability to anticipate safety concerns and respond accordingly.
• Computer proficiency with Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Physical Demands

• Work performed both indoors and outdoors with moderate noise levels.
• Intermittent physical effort involving lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, and stooping.
• Approximately 70% of the time spent walking, standing, reaching, talking, and hearing; 30% or less sitting.
• Normal vision abilities required, including close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions in office settings, meeting rooms, and patient care areas.
• May involve mental and emotional stress.
• Some driving required; work spans all Rimrock facilities with adult patients.
