RN SUPERVISOR SURGICAL SERVICES COORDINATOR

About the Role
Work under the general nursing process while using independent judgment. Provide clinical leadership for nursing and technician staff. Supervise staff and patient care delivery on designated shift, and serve as a clinical resource for staff. Function as unit educator, master teacher, master preceptor, and facilitate evidence-based research into specialized areas of nursing. Serve as a role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.
Responsibilities
- Develop efficient organizational structure and supervise employees, including selection, termination, training, education, correcting deficiencies, performance appraisals, discipline, counseling, and scheduling work assignments. Encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives.
- Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
- Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
- Work within hospital, nursing division, and departmental policies.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and document individualized care plans incorporating age-specific considerations, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
- Administer medication, including IV medication, via the Seven Rights; document and communicate clinical findings.
- Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent has been obtained.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
- Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients as required.
- Ensure patient medical records contain necessary information.
- Answer telephones and triage calls as per departmental policy.
- Ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with quality standards; ensure documentation of patient care activities.
- Participate in orientation; upon successful completion of preceptor training, assume precepting and evaluation responsibilities of new personnel.
- Act as liaison between physicians, staff, patients, families, and other departments to promote and facilitate communication, problem-solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management.
- Designate shift and schedule assignments; assign duties in accordance with the plan of care, patient needs, and within the scope of staff qualifications and licensure/certification/registry.
- Supervise and direct staff providing patient care; accountable for care provided to patients on assigned shift.
- Delegate and monitor completion of duties according to departmental and hospital policies.
- Provide educational leadership to enhance specialized patient care within clinical protocols.
- Educate appropriate staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinate in-service training/workshops for staff.
- Use independent judgment to assign nursing personnel and staff to specific patients.
- Actively participate in nursing strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring, TJC compliance, Magnet Recognition, recruitment and retention of staff, and patient and employee satisfaction.
- Support and implement the shared governance model.
- Monitor compliance with specific objectives; ensure implementation of and compliance with standards, objectives, and operating policies and procedures; follow up with Director on any concerns.
- Act as a clinical resource and role model for department personnel; demonstrate the hospital’s Standards of Performance.
- Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
- Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
- Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
- Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations they don’t understand or may "not seem right."
- Adhere to and promote the core expectations of the Patient Centered Medical Home or Patient Centered Specialty Practice as applicable.
Requirements
- Graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (nonessential).
- 2 years of directly related experience.
- Bilingual in English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo (nonessential).
- CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers within 30 days of hire.
- RN license in New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by New Mexico.
- Nationally certified in area of specialty (nonessential).
Physical Conditions
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical demand requirements exceed those for Medium Work.
Working conditions involve significant hazards, including exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials, requiring personal protective equipment (PPE).
