About the role

Provides direct patient care in an area designated as a specialty unit in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with the policies, values, and mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively delegates patient care to ancillary personnel.
  • May precept student nurses and new hires.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on patient assessment to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources.
  • Monitors, documents, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Evaluates learning needs of the patient and/or family and provides patient and family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including disposition, referral, and spiritual and/or psychosocial support needs.

Requirements

  • Accredited Program: Nursing (Required)
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross (multiple accepted formats listed in posting)
  • PALS certification from the American Heart Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, or Red Cross (multiple accepted formats listed in posting; required for Pediatric areas)
  • Registered Nurse Compact License or Florida RN License
  • One (1) year of nursing experience required
  • Department-specific credentials:
    • ONCC Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Certificate required for RNs administering chemotherapy
    • APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card required within 12 months of hire for RNs administering chemotherapy for oncologic indication in pediatric settings
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for ICU, ED, PACU, Endo, Tele, OB, MHN Pre-Op, and Specialty Procedural areas
    • PALS required for Pediatric areas (30 days to obtain if coming from a non-pediatric background)
    • NRP certification required for NICU (30 days to obtain if coming from a non-NICU background)
    • Certification in Fetal Monitoring (Intermediate or Advanced) through National Credential Center or AWOHNN required for L&D RNs prior to completion of job orientation

Additional Information

  • Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • RN Fellowship Program requires one (1) year of RN independent practice (not inclusive of nurse orientation).
  • RN Fellowship specialties require ACLS and BLS Certifications.
  • Newly licensed RNs have six (6) months to obtain ACLS and/or PALS.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to biohazardous waste, biological hazards (respiratory, skin, or ingestion), blood and/or bodily fluids, communicable diseases and/or pathogens, hazardous chemicals, hazardous medication, needles/sharp objects, and cytotoxic chemicals (frequent: 60-80%)
  • Physical demands: Bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, lifting/carrying patients 35+ pounds, pushing/pulling 0-75 lbs (frequent: 60-80%); standing, walking, sitting, kneeling (moderate to frequent)
  • Environmental factors: Moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, potential for physical assault, wet or slippery surfaces, gas/vapors/fumes, dust, heating devices (moderate: 40-60%)
  • Sensory requirements: Audible speech, hearing acuity, seeing (near and far), depth perception, distinguishing color, repetitive hand/arm movement, smelling acuity (frequent: 60-80%)
  • No exposure to asbestos, extreme heat/cold, hypoxia, laser/high-intensity lights, latex, sudden decompression during flights, unprotected heights, or taste discrimination
