About the role

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence program, the SADV Nurse provides trauma informed, evidence based forensic care for all persons who have experienced sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and/or sexual exploitation through human trafficking. They support high quality, safe, effective care in a consensual partnership with patients, in accordance with the OHA Standards for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence and the College of Nurses of Ontario standards and BCHSYS mission, vision, values and policies.

The SADV Nurse provides forensic nursing care and formally practices as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on the SADV Team, as well as for the hospital and its partners. They advocate for the best forensic nursing practice that is inclusive, equitable and culturally competent by building collaborative interprofessional and intersectoral relationships.

Responsibilities

• Provide trauma-informed, evidence-based forensic nursing care to patients who have experienced sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and/or sexual exploitation
• Conduct forensic medical examinations and collect evidence in accordance with established standards and protocols
• Document clinical findings accurately and maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient information
• Collaborate with interprofessional teams and community partners to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care
• Advocate for equitable, culturally safe, and inclusive forensic nursing practices
• Participate in case reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing professional development

Mandatory Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited college or university nursing program
• Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
• Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training an asset

Preferred Competencies

• Member of RNAO
• Experience working with individuals who have experienced sexual assault and domestic violence
• Experience working with marginalized populations using trauma-informed and harm reduction principles
• Current experience performing speculum exams, vaginal and pelvic exams, and venipuncture
• Current experience providing crisis counselling to victims of trauma
