About the role
The Nurse Residency position offers training, education, and professional development through a six- to twelve-month transition to becoming an RN in the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), or Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). The nurse resident systematically and continuously assists in the collection and assessment of data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic care for the patient and/or family.
Residents perform all required elements of the nursing assessment, including physical examination, readiness-to-learn assessment, psychosocial assessment, functional assessment, and utilization of patient/family-specific assessment scales. As an active member of the multidisciplinary team, the nurse resident collaborates in the development, execution, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care or critical pathway, considering factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost. Decisions and actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner.
The nurse resident assists in establishing goals and strategies for meeting discharge or continued care needs, provides care in collaboration with other nursing staff, and utilizes research findings in practice. Residents participate in organizational performance improvement activities, acquire and maintain knowledge in nursing practice, and assume responsibility for professional development.
Responsibilities

- Provide care in accordance with the nurse practice act and professional nursing role
- Utilize research findings in practice and participate in organizational performance improvement activities
- Assume responsibility for professional development and maintain knowledge in nursing practice

After completing the 6- or 12-month residency program, residents will transition to a full-time, permanent job as a Registered Nurse in either the ICU, ED, or CVICU.
Competency Assessments
Competency assessments are conducted throughout the program in partnership with the clinical education department, Emergency Department, CVICU, and Critical Care Unit (CCU) to determine the individual's competency levels and graduation trajectory.
