Summary

The Registered Professional Nurse assigned to the Emergency Department and/or Inpatient Unit is responsible for delivering patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation tailored to the ages of patients served. Maintains departmental policies, objectives, quality improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Upholds confidentiality of hospital and staff information. Aligns with the philosophy and mission of Mount Saint Mary's Hospital, emphasizing quality care with regard for individual human dignity. Associates may be assigned across multiple hospital locations as needed.

Responsibilities

• Deliver patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Maintain established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Maintain confidentiality of all hospital and staff information.
• Answer telephones, maintain logs, patient charts, and schedule appointments.
• Operate clinical computer information systems, diagnostic equipment, fax, photocopier, and other office tools.
• Adapt to varying patient assignments, including inpatient and observation statuses.
• Handle absentee replacements on short notice and respond to emergency or crisis situations, including potential patient violence.
• Use required protective equipment, such as eye/face protection, gowns, hair coverings, lab coats, masks, and gloves.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
• RN licensure in New York State.
• Current BLS certification within sixty (60) days of placement.
• Current ACLS and PALS certifications within twelve (12) months of placement.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience

• Two (2) years of recent Medical/Surgical experience as a Registered Nurse; or
• One (1) year of recent CCU/ICU and/or Emergency Room experience as a Registered Nurse (preferred).

Skills

• Good human relations and oral/written communication skills.
• Proficiency in using clinical computer information systems, diagnostic equipment, and office tools (e.g., fax, photocopier, calculator, typewriter).
• Ability to research information and maintain accurate records.
• Flexibility in scheduled working hours and adaptability to varying patient assignments.
• Ability to handle emergency or crisis situations, including potential patient violence.

Working Conditions

• Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.

  • Electro-mechanical hazards.
  • Odorous chemicals and specimens.
  • Infections from disease-bearing specimens, biohazardous or radioactive substances, and toxic chemicals (e.g., photocopier).
  • Hazards of handling diseased organs and tissues.
  • Electrical, mechanical, and power equipment hazards.
  • Housekeeping/cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness).
  • Infections and contagious diseases.
  • Radiation hazards.
  • Risk of bloodborne diseases.
• Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• Irregular hours and frequent interruptions.
• Judgment/actions that could result in patient death.
• Required use of protective equipment, including eye/face protection, gowns, hair coverings, lab coats, masks (surgical/N-95), sterile/non-sterile gloves, and utility gloves.
