Responsible for
- Provides ongoing evaluation of assessment, communication, and technical skills of trauma personnel.
- Maintains a high level of expertise in trauma care by actual hands-on experience with trauma patients and is available to work trauma resuscitations.
- Responds to all Trauma Stat Activations (while in-house).
- Reviews trauma admission records for data collection and abstraction for inclusion into the trauma registry and appropriateness of admission service.
- Analyzes all records for quality assurance trauma standards recommended by the Trauma Committee and as stipulated by the American College of Surgeons and the Joint Commission.
- This data includes all phases of trauma care, i.e., pre-hospital, emergency department and inpatient.
- Identifies all performance improvement indicators and provide loop closure from Pre-hospital encounter through discharge.
- Develops and implements education programs for physicians, nurses and EMS leaders.
- Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to develop and maintain a set of quality indicators for the trauma program and to ensure that staff in all departments dealing with the care of trauma patients are knowledgeable about the Trauma Program and standards of care.
- Coordinates trauma program and trauma issues.
- Organizes the trauma committee agenda and meetings with oversight by the Trauma Medical & Program Director.
- Assists with trauma M&M and TOPP takes meeting minutes. Assures meeting minutes are documented, and oversees loop closure.
- Participates in quality improvement and evaluation activities and implements measures to ensure that hospital, DNV, and other quality standards are met.
- Works in conjunction with the Trauma Program Manager to review, monitor and identify PI opportunities at the system and provider levels.
- Escalates cases as appropriate for peer review.
- Evaluates quality assurance filters as defined by the American College of Surgeons, State designated standards and internal filters, for process and care improvement opportunities.
- Affords assistance in ensuring that productivity and PI data is compiled, and reports are prepared for management, LBCMC and/or regulatory bodies.
- Maintains reliable systems to document, track and monitor trauma cases.
- Audits and reviews charts of all trauma admissions, transfers, deaths, and trauma activations. Reviews trauma diversions.
Education & Formal Training
- Required - Bachelor's Degree Nursing
- PREFERRED - Master's Degree Nursing

- Required - Emergency/trauma nursing 3-5 years

- Required - BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association
- Required - TNCC Trauma Nursing Core Course - Emergency Nurses Association
- Required - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association
- Required - Pediatric Trauma Across Continuum Care - Society of Trauma Nurses
- PREFERRED - Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses Certification - Society of Trauma Nurses
- PREFERRED - Trauma Nurse Core Course Instructor Certification - Emergency Nurses Association

Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
