Responsibilities

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served.

• Records patients' medical history and symptoms, performs diagnostic tests, analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.
• Establishes or contributes to a care plan, including administering medication, managing IV lines, administering therapies, observing and recording patient observations, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
• Teaches patients and families about managing illnesses or injuries, post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self-administration of medication and therapy.
• Provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate.
• Supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, and assists them in completing competency skills.
• Collects health data systematically, prioritizing data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs, involving the family.
• Analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses and develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an appropriate patient plan of care that is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient and their specific health problems.
• Develops individualized plans of care reflecting current nursing practice that is evidence-based, ensuring continuity of care.
• Implements interventions in the plan of care, initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provides nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs of the patient and family using a family-centered approach.
• Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes and documents observations, interventions, and monitoring data.
• Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to ensure they maintain and enhance patient outcomes that promote cost-effective, high-quality healthcare.
• Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, regulations, and system policies, maintaining current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Integrates ethical principles in all aspects of practice and enhances knowledge of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Collaborates with others in nursing professional development at institutional, local, regional, and state levels.
• Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and healthcare providers through role-modeling, fostering relationships, and participating in preceptor/mentor programs.
• Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery.
• Collaborates with the patient, family, and other healthcare providers in providing patient care.
• Develops and evaluates evidence-based standards of care for patients and identifies changes in nursing practice using an evidence-based approach.
• Participates in and uses evidence-based research to identify strategies for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Designs, creates, and applies research by supporting integration into practice, fostering systematic evaluative research.
• Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing all resources effectively and efficiently.

Requirements

• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5 or more years of Registered Nurse experience (including direct patient care or indirect RN roles) at the time of hire.
• Associates or Diploma in Nursing (required).
• Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) (preferred).
• Refer to addendum for stroke-specific education requirements for staff caring for stroke patients (required prior to start).
• More than 10 months of med-surg or acute specialty setting experience (required).
• 1 year of RN experience for all Float Positions (required).

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
• State and/or Compact State Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Arizona (required upon hire).
• National certification for unit-specific patient population (preferred).
