Department: SRMC Inpatient Surgical (5-S) – Full Time (FTE: 1.00) – Rotating Shift
About the Role
Work under the general nursing process while using independent judgment to assign nurses, technicians, and nursing care to assigned patients. Provide clinical leadership for nursing and technician staff, ensuring adequate staffing to meet patient census. Supervise staff and patient care delivery on designated shifts, serving as a clinical resource and role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care.
Responsibilities
- Active participation in nursing strategic initiatives such as quality improvement, TJC compliance, Magnet Recognition, recruitment and retention of staff, and patient and employee satisfaction.
- Support and implement the UNMH shared governance model.
- Use independent judgment to assign nursing personnel and staff to specific patients.
- Designate shift and schedule assignments; assign duties in accordance with the plan of care, patient needs, and within the scope of staff qualifications and licensure/certification/registry.
- Supervise and direct staff providing patient care; accountable for care provided to patients on assigned shift.
- Act as a liaison between physicians, staff, patients, families, and other departments to facilitate communication, problem-solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management.
- Develop an efficient organizational structure; supervise employees, including selection, termination, training, education, correcting deficiencies, performance appraisals, discipline, counseling, and scheduling work assignments.
- Encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives.
- Act as a clinical resource and role model for department personnel.
- Delegate and monitor completion of duties according to departmental and hospital policies.
- Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients as required.
- Work within hospital, nursing division, and departmental policies.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and document individualized care plans, including age-specific considerations, discharge planning, and patient/family teaching.
- Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent is obtained.
- Participate in orientation; assume precepting and evaluation responsibilities of new personnel upon successful completion of preceptor training.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
- Ensure patient medical records contain necessary information.
- Answer telephones and triage calls as per departmental policy.
- Administer medication, including IV medication, via the Seven Rights; document and communicate clinical findings.
- Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.
- Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
- Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve it through questioning current policies and processes.
- Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
- Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
- Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations they don’t understand or may "not seem right."
Qualifications
- Graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program (Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred).
- Minimum of 2 years of directly related experience.
- Current RN licensure in New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM.
- CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers within 30 days of hire.
- Nationally certified in area of specialty (preferred).
- Bilingual in English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo (preferred).
Physical Requirements
- Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people.
- Working conditions involve significant hazards, including exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials; PPE required.

- Shift differentials: 17% for Weekday Nights, 26% for Weekend Nights, and 15% for Weekend Days.

Subject to an annual contract and performance appraisal. Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and additionally as required.
