About the role

This is advanced, specialized work in the Department of Revenue involved with analyzing tax returns for complete and accurate information. The role involves communicating with all levels of staff, including management, to resolve tax issues. As an expert in specific tax categories, you will provide technological and procedural assistance to resolve complex tax issues, collaborate on complex tax situations involving statutes and regulations, and ensure returns are processed efficiently and accurately. You will update and write procedures as needed, provide institutional knowledge, and suggest system changes to support multiple tax programs.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve complex tax issues that cannot be resolved by teammates and answer complex processing questions from management and staff regarding tax programs.
  • Handle written correspondence and phone calls with taxpayers, accountants, attorneys, and other authorized representatives.
  • Monitor teammates’ daily work performance and provide input to supervisors for initial probation and performance evaluations.
  • Identify internal programming and software issues and collaborate with IT staff to resolve them.
  • Provide extensive one-on-one training of teammates.
  • Act as a work leader who plans, directs, and assigns work with limited supervision.
  • Make computer system suggestions to improve accuracy and efficiencies for processing tax returns.
  • Test new system changes prior to implementation to ensure proper outcomes.
  • Create and maintain procedures for all processes in the assigned area.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in business plus two years of experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations.
  • OR three years of increasingly responsible experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations.

Qualifications

Preferred: One-year experience in researching and analyzing tax returns and interpretation of tax policies, laws, rules, or regulations.

Knowledge of: leadership/supervision principles and practices; mathematics and accounting; business operations and practices; information technology; resources available for researching laws, rules, and regulations.

Skills: identifying trends and/or unique sets of data; recognizing priorities; good judgment and logic in solving problems.

Ability to: plan, assign, and monitor the work of others; manage and set multiple priorities; communicate clearly and concisely; use deductive techniques to determine information sought; organize and verify tax data/information from computer-generated reports; relate effectively with people representing a wide variety of backgrounds; interpret difficult tax programs for taxpayers; use independent judgment and discretion in solving problems.
