About the role
The Revenue Crimes Specialist/Trainee position requires a candidate who is a United States Citizen, resides and maintains permanent residency in New York State, and holds a valid New York State Driver License. Once selected, the candidate must be able to successfully complete a Peace Officer Academy.
Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct investigations which identify illegal activities designed to evade New York State Tax Law.
- Utilize investigatory techniques, and knowledge of investigative principles, including surveillance, witness/target interviews, financial record and database analysis to advance investigations and obtain evidence of tax crimes.
- Familiarity with New York State Tax Law, Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Laws.
- Write detailed narrative reports of investigative activities and make appropriate updates to the case management system while maintaining a case load.
- Utilize Department databases to identify, locate, and interview individuals related to investigations.
- Facilitate arrest/enforcement activities.
- Perform enforcement, regulatory, and licensing investigative field actives.
- Engage in undercover work.
- Draft and issue subpoenas, criminal summonses, and desk appearance tickets.
- Establish, maintain, and preserve evidence and the chain of custody.
- Testify in court and administrative hearings.
- Provide investigative support to prosecutors during trial preparation and court proceedings.
- Conduct regulatory inspections, business premise inspections, and assist in civil enforcement activities.
- Apply for and execute search warrants.
- Maintain a valid New York State driver license, pistol permit, and New York State peace officer status.
- Appropriately carry, safeguard, maintain, qualify with, and -if necessary- use Department-issued firearm.
- Safely operate Department vehicles in accordance with all policies and applicable laws.
- Adhere to and comply with Department and Division policies, including attendance and leave rules, outside employment and personal weapon ownership.
- Successfully and timely complete all mandatory and assigned training.
- Accept full accountability for success in carrying out job responsibilities.
- Take direction from the District Office Management Team.
- Travel, including overnight, for investigations, training, and other official business.
Requirements
- Reside in and maintain New York State residency during and at the start of employment.
- Be eligible for appointment as a New York State Peace Officer as established under New York State Criminal Procedure Law.
- Be able to successfully complete a Peace Officer Academy.
- Meet physical, medical, and psychological standards established for the position.
Qualifications
- Trainee 1: Bachelor’s degree; OR Associates degree and two years’ experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence.
- Trainee 2: Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence; OR Associates degree and three years’ experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence.
- Journey Level: Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence; OR Associate's degree in criminal justice and four years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence; OR Six years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime and/or conducting related field investigations of criminal activities which includes establishing a chain of evidence.

Pay
- Trainee 1: Starting from the SG 14 level, $53,764 - $68,630.
- Trainee 2: Starting from the SG 16 level, $59,994 - $76,359.
- Journey Level: Starting from the SG 18 level, $66,951 - $85,138.
