Duties Description

  • Plan and conduct investigations to identify illegal activities designed to evade New York State Tax Law.
  • Apply investigative principles and techniques to obtain evidence of tax crimes.
  • Familiarity with NYS Tax, Penal, and Criminal Procedure Laws.
  • Write detailed narrative reports of investigative activities.
  • Identify, locate, interview, and interrogate individuals related to investigations.
  • Issue legal process such as subpoenas, criminal summonses, and desk appearance tickets.
  • Testify in court and administrative hearings.
  • Support prosecutors during trial preparation and proceedings.
  • Conduct regulatory inspections and paperwork.
  • Create tactical plans.
  • Apply for and execute search warrants.
  • Carry, safeguard, maintain, qualify with, and use Department-issued firearm if necessary.
  • Safely operate Department vehicles.
  • Adhere to and comply with Department and Division policies.
  • Complete mandatory and assigned training.
  • Work as part of a team, collaborating with other investigators, auditors, and legal staff.
  • Communicate respectfully, honestly, clearly, and culturally.
  • Take direction from the District Office Management Team.
  • Travel for investigations, training, and other official business.

Minimum Qualifications

  • TRAINEE 1: Bachelor’s degree OR Associates degree and two years’ experience in tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations.
  • TRAINEE 2: Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience OR Associates degree and three years’ experience.
  • REVENUE CRIMES SPECIALIST 1: Bachelor's degree and two years of experience OR Associate's degree in criminal justice and four years of experience OR six years of experience.

Additional Comments

Schedule, travel, and telecommuting to be discussed at interview. Salary range depends on the level of appointment: Trainee 1 ($53,764 - $68,630), Trainee 2 ($59,994 - $76,359), Journey Level ($66,951 - $85,138).

Candidates must meet physical, medical, and psychological standards, submit to a background check, have a valid driver's license, and be able to obtain a pistol permit.

Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and reside in New York State at the time of appointment and maintain residency during employment.

The salary listed is a range, starting from the Trainee 1 level and ending at the Journey level, this will depend on what level the candidate is coming in at.
