About the role
The Revenue Crimes Specialist/Trainee position requires a candidate who is a United States Citizen, resides and maintains permanent residency in New York State, and holds a valid New York State Driver License. Once selected, the candidate must be able to successfully complete a Peace Officer Academy.
Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct investigations to identify illegal activities evading New York State Tax Law.
- Utilize investigatory techniques, including surveillance, witness/target interviews, financial record and database analysis, to advance investigations and obtain evidence of tax crimes.
- Familiarize with New York State Tax Law, Penal Law, and Criminal Procedure Laws.
- Write detailed narrative reports of investigative activities and update the case management system.
- Identify, locate, and interview individuals related to investigations using Department databases.
- Facilitate arrest/enforcement activities, engage in undercover work, draft and issue subpoenas, criminal summonses, and desk appearance tickets.
- Establish, maintain, and preserve evidence and the chain of custody, testify in court and administrative hearings, and provide investigative support to prosecutors.
- Conduct regulatory inspections, business premise inspections, and assist in civil enforcement activities.
- Apply for and execute search warrants, safely operate Department vehicles, and adhere to Department policies.
- Carry, safeguard, maintain, qualify with, and use Department-issued firearms if necessary.
- Complete mandatory and assigned training, interact with others respectfully, honestly, clearly, and culturally, and take direction from the District Office Management Team.
- Travel for investigations, training, and other official business.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree; OR Associates degree and two years’ experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations.
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations; OR Associates degree and three years’ experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations.
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations; OR Associate's degree in criminal justice and four years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations; OR Six years of experience in conducting investigations of tax crimes, white collar crime, and related field investigations.

Benefits
Salary range depends on the level of the position: Trainee 1 is equivalent to SG 14 $53,764 - $68,630, Trainee 2 is equivalent to SG 16 $59,994 - $76,359, and Journey Level is equivalent to SG 18 $66,951 - $85,138. Location pay is available.

Candidates must reside in and maintain New York State residency during and at the start of employment. Candidates must be eligible for appointment as a New York State Peace Officer as established under New York State Criminal Procedure Law. The position is also subject to a review of tax return submissions by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
