Respite/Companion

Community Horizons is assisting a local family in finding a companion to provide support and engagement for an 18-year-old non-verbal autistic son in their home.

About the role

The companion will support the son in his daily routine, encourage meaningful interaction, and help maintain a calm, structured environment. This role focuses on engagement, safety, and building rapport.

Responsibilities

• Provide companionship and positive interaction
• Support communication using non-verbal cues
• Maintain a safe, predictable environment
• Encourage participation in preferred hobbies or sensory activities
• Follow family guidance and established routines

Requirements

• Experience with autism or non-verbal individuals is helpful but not required
• Patient, calm, and consistent
• Comfortable learning the son’s communication style
• Reliable and able to work independently in a home setting

Schedule

• Tuesday after school: 3pm to 7pm
• Saturdays: 11am to 6pm
• Sunday: possibly respite hours

Pay

$16.32–$16.99/hour
