About the Role

The Respiratory Therapist provides, under medical direction, the assessment, treatment, management, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardio-pulmonary system. The RT performs these functions primarily in critical care areas in addition to other wards. The therapist assumes primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including assisting in the orientation of new Respiratory Therapists. Initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures, maintains patient records, and selects, assembles, checks, and operates equipment. The RT will be delegated charge responsibilities when a Clinical Coordinator is not on duty.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients receiving Respiratory Therapy daily to determine effectiveness and appropriateness; verify patients are receiving prescribed therapy and make appropriate clinical decisions based on physical assessment and chart review.
  • Perform patient education and training to ensure effective self-therapy after discharge and promote preventive measures.
  • Access clinical data and accurately document in the patient medical record using the hospital’s computerized information systems.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of all department equipment, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and processing.
  • Review, explain, and demonstrate policies and procedures to new employees; assist in orientation by teaching or observing new therapists to ensure competency.
  • Maintain clinical expertise by attending continuing education classes, respiratory seminars, meetings, and self-improvement programs; supply proof of yearly CEUs to the Respiratory Clinical Leader or Manager.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited program in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Current Connecticut State license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (CRT or RRT).
  • Maintain the following certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (required upon hire).
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) according to the American Heart Association.
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Schedule

37.5 hours per week. 12.5-hour shifts (7:00 AM–7:30 PM and 7:30 PM–7:00 AM). Rotating day and overnight shifts with the option to work nights only.

Pay

Sign-on bonus available: $25,000 for new graduates, $40,000 for candidates with 1+ years of experience.
