About the Role

This position supervises a shift of Respiratory Care personnel at San Joaquin General Hospital and establishes an eligible list for future vacancies. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a background check and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, selects, schedules, assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of subordinate Respiratory Care staff; provides technical assistance and evaluates staff performance.
  • Orients and trains new respiratory therapy staff, paramedics, and respiratory therapy students; provides in-service training on new and existing equipment and procedures; certifies respiratory therapy staff assigned to transport teams.
  • Provides training and orientation to nursing staff on new equipment and procedures.
  • Performs skilled respiratory care; serves as a member of cardiac arrest, transport, and neonatal transport teams.
  • Consults with physicians on patient status and response; suggests changes as indicated.
  • Assists in developing and revising department policies and procedures; implements new policies and interprets them to staff.
  • Maintains records; prepares correspondence and reports.
  • May act in the absence of the Director of Respiratory Care.

Requirements

  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the Respiratory Care Board of the State of California.
  • Three years of experience as a respiratory care practitioner.

Knowledge

  • Principles of supervision and training.
  • Current principles, methods, and techniques of respiratory therapy and blood gas testing.
  • Clinical aspects of blood gases and respiratory therapy care.
  • Operation of equipment used in respiratory therapy.
  • Effective guest relation techniques.

Skills

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate others.
  • Administer a variety of skilled respiratory therapy treatments.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs to respiratory therapy equipment; adjust equipment to individual patient needs.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, co-workers, and others.

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Mobility: Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods, walking, pushing/pulling, and bending/squatting; occasional sitting for long periods, operating heavy equipment, running, and stair climbing.
  • Lifting: Frequent lifting of 5 to 30 lbs.; occasional lifting of 30 to 70 lbs., and restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people.
  • Visual Requirements: Constant use of overall vision, color perception, eye/hand coordination, and depth perception; frequent reading/close-up work and field of vision/peripheral.
  • Dexterity: Frequent holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion, and writing.
  • Hearing/Talking: Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing on the telephone/radio, talking in person, and talking on the telephone.
  • Emotional/Psychological: Constant public contact and concentration; frequent exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief or death, decision-making, and working weekends/nights; occasional exposure to hazardous materials, working alone, and overtime/travel.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequent exposure to noise; occasional exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, indoor cold/heat, and hazardous materials.

  • Retirement Plan: Covered by the County Retirement Law of 1937; visit SJCERA for details.
  • Deferred Compensation: Annual contribution limit of $22,500 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less); $30,000 for individuals age 50 or older. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
  • Vacation: 10 days per year up to 3 years; 15 days after 3 years; 20 days after 10 years; 23 days after 20 years.
  • Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year (effective July 1, 2017).
  • Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation; eligible for 8 hours of administrative leave if leave balance equals at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll for the entire calendar year.
  • Bereavement Leave: 3 days of paid leave for the death of a qualifying family member; 2 additional days for the death of a spouse, domestic partner, parent, or child.
  • Merit Salary Increase: Eligible for a step increase after 52 weeks (2,080 hours) at each step of the salary range.
  • Educational Reimbursement: Up to $850 per fiscal year for career-related coursework; up to $1,600 per fiscal year for approved four-year college/university programs.
  • Parking Supplemental: Up to $20 per pay period for employees assigned to the Downtown Core Area who pay for parking.
  • School Activities: Up to 40 hours per year (max 8 hours per month) to participate in children’s school activities.

Pay

$7,415.11 - $9,013.11 per month.
