About the role
This position maintains supplies, medication, and medical gas tanks within the Respiratory Care Services department. Responsibilities include processing equipment, administering medications via nebulizer, and providing intermittent non-invasive patient care. This role does not involve critical care or the management of unstable patients.
Responsibilities
- Maintains adequate amounts of supplies needed for the department
- Picks up dirty equipment and processes it to maintain a supply of clean, ready-to-use equipment
- Performs testing of Cidex and/or other solutions utilized by the department
- Administers continuous oxygen and continuous bland aerosol therapy per department guidelines
- Does not participate in invasive procedures (e.g., intubations) or critical care (e.g., mechanical ventilation)
- Instructs patients in the use and performance of Incentive Spirometry
- Performs Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) per department guidelines
- Charges for all services provided, including use of the BCX system
- Performs arterial punctures
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Registration with the NCRCB as an RCA required
- Enrolled student in good standing of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program required
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association
Skills
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English
- Ability to react calmly and maintain composure in stressful situations
- Manual dexterity to operate and assemble equipment
- Visual acuity
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
- Ability to position and move patients
- Ability to push heavy equipment to patients’ bedsides
- May involve exposure of skin, eye, and mucous membranes to blood or other potentially infectious materials
