Residential Specialist
Position Overview
Position Overview: S:US is seeking a Residential Specialist for their women's shelter in Manhattan. The position is located at W. 135th St., New York, NY 10030. The Residential Specialist provides a warm, compassionate welcome to new shelter residents and promotes person-centered services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct regular scheduled rounds to ensure safety and residents' wellbeing.
- Enter activity log information and shift notes in a timely and accurate manner.
- Complete necessary admissions paperwork.
- Aid in escorting residents to services and activities outside the facility.
- Meet with Shift Supervisor for individual and group supervision.
- Plan, implement, and research social activities for residents.
- Facilitate resident support groups.
- Collaborate with case managers on regular basis.
- Provide initial orientation to program.
- Support administrative tasks such as office coverage, telephone work, and food services.
- Understand and follow emergency procedures, including fire drills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisor and Program Director.
- Attend job-related trainings and agency meetings as necessary.
- Coordinate meals.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Human Services or High Diploma/GED with 3+ years' social service experience.
- Experience with a trauma-informed, client-centered approach and an anti-oppressive lens.
- Ability to communicate effectively with empathy and honesty.
- Flexibility with schedule as needed.
- Professional maturity during crisis situations.
- Sensitivity and experience with homelessness, substance misuse, harm reduction, and disenfranchised communities.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer-based programs and typing skills.
- Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
- Naloxone certification.
- Valid driver’s license and bi-lingual communication.
- Food Handler license.
