About the Role
The Resident Director (RD) plays a key role in fostering a supportive and engaging residential community. This position involves supervision of Resident Assistants, community development, student accountability, crisis response, and programming within University housing.
Responsibilities
- Supervision and Development of Resident Assistants:
- Recruit, select, and supervise 8-9 Resident Assistants (RAs), including oversight of resident engagement, on-call coverage, programming, and student accountability procedures.
- Conduct regular one-to-one and team meetings to align staff development with University priorities.
- Guide RAs in creating transformative programs and interactions that support student growth.
- Set and uphold clear expectations for RA responsibilities, including community development, policy enforcement, and addressing performance issues.
- Establish behavioral and confidentiality standards for RAs regarding sensitive student information (psychological, medical, academic, and personal).
- Community Development and Area Presence:
- Maintain an accessible and welcoming office environment to foster relationships with students and staff.
- Promote residential community goals in alignment with University initiatives.
- Support students through intentional connections to campus resources.
- Actively use the provided meal plan to build relationships with staff and students.
- Student Accountability, Crisis Response, and On-Call Duties:
- Share on-call responsibilities, including weekday nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Model and communicate University expectations for student behavior.
- Enforce policies and document incidents, conducting disciplinary meetings from case creation to follow-up.
- Programming, Planning, and Evaluation:
- Coach RAs in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs that meet departmental, divisional, and university-wide learning objectives.
- Administer the programming budget for the designated area with fiscal responsibility.
- Create and participate in programming or small-group engagement opportunities as a professional team member.
- Maintenance of a Safe and Functional Living Environment:
- Conduct ongoing assessments of building conditions, including individual rooms, common areas, and surrounding grounds.
- Collaborate with Maintenance and Custodial teams to address area-improvement projects.
- Supervise fire drills, health and safety inspections, and the completion of Room Condition Forms.
- Oversee move-in, closing, damage billing, and appeals processes.
- Collateral Roles and Professional Commitments:
- Participate in collateral assignments aligned with personal, professional, or departmental needs.
- Develop relationships with campus partners to foster collaboration across departments.
- Engage in professional development opportunities, including involvement in regional or national student affairs associations.
- Marginal Functions:
Additional duties may be assigned based on departmental needs and may vary depending on the specific unit or function.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (required).
- Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling, or a related field (preferred).
- Experience in staff supervision, residence hall operations, or student development programming (preferred).
- Experience with living-learning communities, first-year programs, or diverse populations (preferred).
- Excellent administrative, oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong human relations, mediation, and training skills.
- Ability to handle confrontational situations effectively.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to support and promote the University’s mission.
Skills
- Proficiency in Maxient, Microsoft Office, StarRez, Colleague, and FMX.
- Ability to meet physical demands of a University housing environment, including walking, office work, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
Schedule
- Full-time, 12-month position.
- 37.5 hours per week, primarily Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends for on-call duties.
- Rotating 24/7 on-call schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Work is primarily based in the assigned first-year residence hall office, with a minimum of two days per week in the main office.
