General Purpose

The Resident Advocate is primarily responsible for attending to the needs of Shelter residents and providing crisis support to callers on the 24-hour help line.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents, staff, volunteers, donors, and vendors.
  • Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of all client information.
  • Answer and manage multiple phone lines on the 24-hour help line; provide crisis advocacy, safety planning support, and referrals and information to help callers with guidance and resources; and document all activities in electronic database.
  • Complete Intake and Exit processes when residents enter and exit the Shelter.
  • Provide supportive advocacy, active listening, and support residential living needs for Shelter residents including help answering questions and providing supplies.
  • Aid residents with meal preparation as needed.
  • Clean bedrooms and bathrooms upon exit of residents and perform tasks necessary to maintain all areas free from health/safety/fire hazards.
  • Conduct safety and security checks of residents and property by moving inside and outside the facility.
  • Perform CPR and administer First Aid as needed.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare activities for group meetings and act as a facilitator as assigned.
  • Monitor activity on camera security system to maintain safety of residents and security of property.
  • Complete miscellaneous duties to comply with sanitation, safety, health, and licensing regulations.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to demonstrate/utilize compassion, empathy, and respect when interacting with residents and callers on the 24-hour helpline.
  • Pass and maintain a clear Direct Access Clearance System (DACS) criminal background check.
  • Obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks) and recertify every two years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education or experience in any Human Services field

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • The work environment is varied. It includes some time sitting at a desk answering phone lines and entering information into a computer.
  • Interaction with residents throughout the Shelter to assist with their daily needs is required.
  • Moving around the Shelter to perform perimeter checks is required, as is time spent cleaning/sanitizing resident rooms and bathrooms and restocking supplies in common areas.
  • These duties require moving up and down stairs, lifting/moving items to facilitate cleaning and stocking, and moving around outside the Shelter during all weather conditions.

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Operation of basic office equipment such as telephone, computer, fax, copy machine, and camera security system;
  • Basic cleaning tools such as mop, broom, vacuum, and washer/dryer.
