About the role
The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) provides direction, leadership, and management of a student residence hall or apartment complex. The RLC oversees a 24-hour residence hall or apartment complex for 400 to 600 student residents, a student volunteer team of 5 to 21 Resident Assistants, 3 to 6 Program Assistants, and 5 to 10 Student Assistants.
Responsibilities
- Establish an atmosphere conducive to achieving the goals and objectives of Housing and Residence Life, the mission of the Division of Student Life, and the mission of the University.
- Provide student counseling and advising, co-curricular education, crisis management, community development, maintain and adjudicate housing conduct, budget management, and oversight of residence halls or apartment areas.
- Work independently and develop solutions to complex problems.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Relate to the present-day population of college students and help them with their personal and social development.
- Keep records and accounts.
- Select, train, and evaluate student assistants and staff.
- Analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt action.
- Prepare concise reports.
- Develop, organize, and implement residence programs.
- Perform mathematical calculations.
- Absess needs quickly and effectively and intervene in student behavioral and crisis scenarios involving physical and/or emotional risk.
- Advise students individually or in groups on routine matters.
- Maintain dignity and self-control in stressful situations.
- Work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis.
Requirements
- Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
- Equivalent to two years of full-time experience coordinating or directing college-level group activities, including one year directing a Residence Life complex that has provided a wide exposure to student group problems.
- One year of job-related non-paid experience may substitute for one year of general experience required.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- General knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior.
- Possess strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills; as well as good reading and writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and develop solutions to complex problems.
- Ability to assess needs quickly and effectively and intervene in student behavioral and crisis scenarios involving physical and/or emotional risk.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis.
- Demonstrated interest and/or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
Qualifications
- A master's degree in Higher Education, Student Services, Counseling, or a related field very strongly preferred.
- Three years of residence hall experience beyond the Resident Advisor position preferred.
- Skill in program presentation, living learning community experience, student conduct, crisis intervention, staff supervision and experience with computers strongly preferred.
- Experience using student conduct databases such as Maxient or assignment databases such as StarRez.
