Research Technician II

About the Role

This entry-level research technical role participates in planned research projects by performing research protocols, experimental procedures, and other laboratory tasks under direct supervision. The Research Technician will support ongoing research in the Flake laboratory at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), specifically working on an extrauterine system that supports extremely premature neonates. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in a highly collaborative and supportive environment, with potential for authorship on scientific manuscripts.

Recent graduates and those looking to gain experience before applying to medical or graduate school are encouraged to apply. While some laboratory experience is preferred, qualified candidates with a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or related studies—or those who have graduated on a pre-medical track—will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine tests and experiments under the direction of the principal investigator, supervisor, or other designee.
• Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed and records/checks experiments for completeness and accuracy.
• Performs calculations and maintains appropriate logs and lab notebooks.
• Performs tasks requiring familiarity with fundamental techniques and lab equipment.
• May assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures.
• Maintains office, lab area, solutions, reagents, supplies, and equipment; disposes of specimens, media, and other materials using appropriate procedures.
• Assists in the care and maintenance of lab equipment.
• May coordinate schedules of tests and procedures.
• Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques.
• Records results, organizes data, and maintains lab notebooks in an organized manner.
• Compiles and helps analyze data; prepares charts, graphs, and results of studies as directed.
• Conducts literature searches as directed.
• Functions as an independent practitioner providing intensive and critical care in an animal NICU (training provided).
• Manages lab inventory, aseptic scrub and surgical training, and supply ordering.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (Required).
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred).
• At least one (1) year of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (e.g., Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience (Required).
• At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (e.g., Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience (Preferred).

Pay

Salary range: $43,900.00 - $54,800.00 annually (full-time). Part-time pay will be adjusted accordingly.

Schedule

Rotating shift (United States).

As a condition of employment, CHOP employees who work in patient care buildings or have patient-facing responsibilities must receive an annual influenza vaccine.
