Research Technician II
This position is for the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Pediatrics, located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, and a current TB test will be required prior to the start of employment.
About the role
The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented person to join a virology research lab. Our lab studies the viral and host determinants that dictate chikungunya virus (CHIKV) replication and pathogenesis.
The position will include performing supervised and independent research at BSL2 conditions, consisting of tissue culture, virological assays, and molecular biology-based assays to uncover mechanisms of viral replication. The technician’s role will be to assist in the execution of a variety of laboratory experiments and work collaboratively with other members of the lab. The position will include an independent research project after training and demonstration of proficiency.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures
- Prepare specimens
- Oversee supply management and general lab maintenance
- Operate and properly maintain equipment
- Generate virus stocks and perform viral titer determination
- Conduct cell culture, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ELISAs, and SDS-PAGE
- Inventory and ordering of lab supplies
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (or equivalent relevant work experience)
- 1+ years of relevant laboratory experience
- Good knowledge of basic laboratory skills
- Ability to work independently on tasks
- Flexibility with shift/hours; evenings and weekends may be required
