About the opportunity

The Davis College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at West Virginia University is hosting a Research Mentee position. WVU’s NSF-funded RaMP program provides recent graduates from underrepresented communities, schools with limited resources, and first-generation college students with the opportunity to enhance their research skills through a year-long program. The program aims to equip participants with essential research skills to advance in STEM fields, focusing on solving societal issues in water use and quality, environmental contamination, and biological correlates of disease.

What you'll do

  • Research activities including lab & field based analysis as needed, data collection, data management, and data analysis
  • Oral and written communication of results
  • Mentees will acquire training in ethical and safe research conduct, effective experimental design and scientific writing
  • Skills in laboratory work and field and data analysis techniques that are immediately applicable in the current STEM workplace (academic or otherwise)
  • Participate in weekly program, lab meetings, workshops and annual program meeting

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience in the following:
    • Research
    • Minimal experience in a research environment required
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Design experiments, collect and manage data, and utilize software to analyze findings
  • Learn and operate specific lab and field tools
  • Work well independently and within the lab group
  • Communicate scientific approaches and findings to larger groups
  • Acquire a comprehensive understanding of relevant published literature and methodologies
