Responsibilities
- Follow Company’s animal welfare policies and procedures
- Data collection, record keeping, feed system monitoring
- Schedules feed, trucks, and orders routine supplies
- Prepares payroll and monitors research expenses
- Train and supervise staff
- Record keeping and compliance with SHPD report system
- Basic maintenance of farm equipment
- Compose weekly data collection summaries and research trial status updates
- Ensure all equipment, machinery, and vehicles are accounted for and properly maintained
- Conduct farm inspections and correct any non-compliance
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in an Agricultural field and 2+ years of relevant experience
- Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project
- Swine experience required
- Tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions
- Able to tolerate and learn to perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry
- Prioritize when working under constraints that could be outside of his/her control
- Understand experimental design for research experiments
- Excellent problem-solving skills and strong multi-tasking abilities
- PQA certification, CPR certification
- Learns and demonstrates capability/knowledge to operate and maintain feed systems including daily monitoring along with performing routine maintenance
- Computer skills: Microsoft Excel, Outlook, RFID technology tags and wands (LeeO app and data dashboard, Exago ultrasound), PigKnows STAMP, supply app, and any other data software that is utilized in Smithfield
- Learns and demonstrates knowledge and ability to operate and maintain all research equipment including but not limited to: scales, specialized ventilation/data controllers, cameras, sensors and water treatment systems
- Operates tractor, lawnmower and Hercules arm after properly trained
- Operates basic power and hand tools and pressure washer pump
- Walk an average of 2 – 4 miles per day, occasionally up to 5 or 6
- Lift up to 50 lbs on a limited basis and be able to push, pull, and drag up to 100 lbs
- Climb in pens and feed bins when needed
- Work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise research assistants or interns
- Trains, supervises, and delegates tasks to employees
- Assures proper animal husbandry skills are being utilized
- Communicates and promotes Smithfield’s core values, mission, and goals to the members of the crew
- Teaches and follows Standard Operating Procedures
