The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, established the Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP) in August 2008 with the support of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. The Chair serves as a national centre for research, teaching, training, policy engagement, and capacity building in consumer law and consumer protection. It also publishes the International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice (IJCLP) and the bi-annual newsletter March on Consumer Law and Practice.
Eligibility
- Essential
- LL.B. degree from a recognised university.
- Demonstrated interest in consumer law, public policy, technology law, competition law, regulatory governance, or related fields.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Familiarity with legal databases such as SCC Online, Manupatra, HeinOnline, Westlaw, LexisNexis, or equivalent resources.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Desirable
- LL.M. degree or enrolment in an LL.M. programme.
- Prior experience as a Research Assistant, Law Clerk, academic researcher, journal editor, or policy researcher.
- Experience in empirical research methodologies, data analysis, or policy research.
- Publications in journals, blogs, newspapers, or edited volumes.
- Experience in organising academic events, workshops, or conferences.
- Familiarity with citation standards, academic publishing, and manuscript editing.
Responsibilities
- Conduct doctrinal, empirical, comparative, and interdisciplinary legal research on consumer law and policy issues.
- Assist in preparing research reports, policy briefs, consultation responses, working papers, training manuals, and academic publications.
- Track legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments relating to consumer protection, competition, technology regulation, and digital markets.
- Support literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, citation verification, and reference management.
- Assist in research projects commissioned by governmental and regulatory bodies.
- Support the editorial management of the International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice (IJCLP) and other Chair publications.
- Prepare case summaries, legislative updates, newsletters, blogs, and website content.
- Maintain databases of judgments, legislative materials, policy documents, and research resources.
- Assist in designing and delivering training programmes, workshops, conferences, consultations, and capacity-building initiatives.
- Prepare training materials, presentations, and background notes.
- Coordinate with external experts, institutions, regulators, and partner organisations.
- Assist in organising conferences, seminars, competitions, and public engagement initiatives.
- Manage project timelines, documentation, and reporting requirements.
- Support the Chair’s website, social media presence, and dissemination activities.
Duration
Initial appointment for one year, extendable based on performance and project requirements.
