Renewable Energy Technician 1 [On-Site]
Scope of Job
This position, under specific direction from the site manager or his/her designee, performs unsupervised field maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on one or more types of renewable energy generators. The scope includes full system installation, commissioning, maintenance, system performance evaluation and troubleshooting of power and energy systems. The Technician 3 may lead teams on routine tasks. The Technician 3 is expected to have knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems in a renewable energy asset. Technician 3 demonstrates proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools, understanding of system software, and familiarity with the latest industry standards.
Required Training
Each Renewable Energy Technician will attend mandatory four (4) week training and certification course at the start of their employment. The exact duration will be determined based on experience and qualifications. The training is in Albert Lea, MN, and travel, accommodation, and expenses will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Primary Focus: On the job autonomy & leadership
- Technician 1 (Entry-Level): Assisting experienced techs with maintenance and repairs; learning safety protocols. Works under direct supervision and specific direction.
- Technician 2 (Experienced): Independent preventative maintenance; routine troubleshooting and minor upgrades. High independence on PMs; participates in the 24-hour "On Call" rotation.
- Technician 3 (Senior): Advanced troubleshooting and unsupervised corrective maintenance. Unsupervised execution of all corrective/preventative maintenance; trains and oversees Tech 1 & 2. Shared Responsibilities (Applicable To All Levels): All technicians share a commitment to safety, operational excellence, and asset integrity. Adhere to all safety protocols, including LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures, and lead site safety assessments. Maintain company property and equipment safely and responsibly. Accurately complete all administrative work, including daily maintenance logs, work orders, time tracking, and warranty/inventory documentation. Attend all required safety and technical training. Maintain the highest level of system integrity and support site budget control by seeking efficiencies.

Qualifications
- Requirement Type: Tech 1 (Entry), Tech 2 (Experienced), Tech 3 (Senior)
- Experience: Tech 1 (Entry) - 0 to 1 year in renewable energy or equivalent. Tech 2 (Experienced) - 1 to 2 years in renewable energy or similar. Tech 3 (Senior) - 2+ years of renewable energy experience.
- Education: Tech 1 (Entry) - High school diploma or equivalent. Tech 2 (Experienced) - High school diploma or equivalent. Tech 3 (Senior) - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge & Skills: Basic computer skills; ability to follow instructions. Knowledge of schematics, multi-meters, and electrical/mechanical components. Deep competency in generation theory, arc flash standards, NEC, and diagnostics.
- Certifications: Ability to complete all required training upon hire. Must meet Qualified Electrical Worker standards. Qualified Electrical Worker standards + system software & industry competency.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Field Work: Work is primarily conducted 100% in the renewable asset field for Techs 1-3. Tech 4 may spend approximately 20% of time in the office environment.
- Work at Height: Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and structures to heights of over 300 feet (91 meters) and work at those heights and in confined spaces.
- Conditions: Comfortable working in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain) and in an electrical-mechanical environment with high voltage/stored energy.
- Lifting: Ability to regularly lift up to 35 pounds and frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Safety Restriction (Wind only): Due to weight restrictions for fall-arrest equipment, the maximum employee weight must not exceed 285 lbs.
