Remote Volunteer DevOps Engineer — iLevelUP

About the role

The volunteer DevOps Engineer will enhance the reliability and security of iLevelUP's educational platform, which serves underserved youth and young people. Key responsibilities include reviewing and improving development, testing, deployment, monitoring, backup, and recovery workflows, implementing CI/CD checks, defining infrastructure through configuration, managing secrets, and creating runbooks for releases, incidents, and restoration.

Responsibilities

• Review current environments, build pipelines, infrastructure, deployment controls, and operational risks
• Implement documented CI/CD checks for tests, security scanning, builds, approvals, and rollback
• Define infrastructure through reviewable configuration where appropriate
• Improve secret management, least-privilege access, logging, monitoring, alerting, backup, and recovery
• Create runbooks for releases, incidents, restoration, and handoff
• Control costs and resource use within approved limits
• Coverage of environments and credentials must be authorized
• Test changes in nonproduction environments before approved release
• Never alter production infrastructure, permissions, billing, DNS, or credentials without explicit authorization

Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, Git, and Linux
• Strong understanding of access control, networking, backup, recovery, vulnerability management, and incident response
• Ability to document and automate repeatable operational processes
• Clear, dependable remote communication
• At least 21 years old and willing to complete screening and confidentiality requirements
