About the role

The Inpatient Trauma Coder will be responsible for reviewing and assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for complex inpatient encounters. This role requires extensive experience coding cases from a Level I Trauma Center and collaborating with clinical documentation and coding teams to ensure compliant reimbursement and data integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform coding reviews for complex inpatient hospitalizations, including trauma and high-acuity cases.
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes in accordance with official coding guidelines.
  • Review records involving specialties such as cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedics, oncology, pulmonology, transplant services, and general medicine.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) professionals to resolve documentation discrepancies and coding questions.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards while managing a consistent coding workload.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary teams regarding coding-related inquiries.
  • Utilize electronic medical record and computer-assisted coding platforms to support coding workflows.

Requirements

  • Active CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certification required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent Level I Trauma inpatient coding experience required.
  • Prior experience coding for an academic medical center or teaching hospital strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Epic and 3M 360 Encompass/CAC preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable interacting with physicians, CDI teams, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Associate degree or higher preferred.

Additional Details

  • Initial training schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM EST.
  • Following training, employees may select a fixed 8.5-hour consecutive shift between 5:00 AM and 8:00 PM EST.
  • First day onsite attendance required for equipment pickup, badge issuance, and onboarding activities.
  • Productivity expectations generally range from 15–18 charts per day while maintaining 95% coding accuracy.
