About the role
Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures. Ensures that patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. Distributes appropriate information to ancillary departments. Reports to the Patient Access Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Register patients for hospital services from a physician's office and pre-admit these patients as needed.
- Handle admitting requirements for patients scheduled for admissions and outpatient procedures, including obtaining authorization and verifying insurance eligibility.
- Interview patients or their representatives to obtain or verify personal information, including emergency contacts and insurance details.
- Provide information to patients or representatives about billing, complaint processes, patient rights, and HIPAA.
- Distribute hospital-specific literature.
- Collect payments (e.g., co-payments) when required, record payments, and forward them to the Business Office.
- Maintain knowledge of hospital policies and available services.
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and professionalism in stressful situations.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity while ensuring confidentiality of patient records.
- Interact professionally with patients and families, providing explanations and verbal reassurance as needed.
- Maintain positive working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Answer telephones politely and communicate information to appropriate personnel or family members.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Patient Access Supervisor.
Requirements
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to type accurately and efficiently.
- Proficiency in using office machines.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- At least 6 months of experience in a medical office or hospital setting preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional language skills are a plus.
Qualifications
Education Required: High School or better.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, or sit for long periods of time.
