Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
About the role
The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people through stationary and mobile veterinary clinics in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. We help pet owners overcome barriers to care by bringing quality services directly to underserved communities and partially or fully subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive care. As the Licensed Veterinary Technician Staff and Floor Manager at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), you’ll support high-quality/high-volume spay-neuter surgery (HQHVSN) and primary pet care (PPC) for cats and dogs. You’ll direct workflow on the clinic floor, assist veterinarians in medical treatments, and communicate with clients while working closely with the CVC management team to optimize care for animals in the communities we serve.
Responsibilities
- Medical/Floor Management
- Perform veterinary technician functions, including venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and assistance, diagnostics, pharmacy, and patient recovery.
- Support HQHVSN and PPC for cats and dogs alongside veterinarians, technicians, and assistants.
- Use low-stress, gentle animal handling techniques to ensure safety and compassion for animals, staff, and clients.
- Communicate effectively with clients using a kind, nonjudgmental approach during intake, history-taking, and discharge.
- Floor Management
- Oversee workflow on the clinic floor to optimize efficiency and patient care.
- Maintain a visible presence in the clinic to support staff, adjust workflows, and foster commitment to the ASPCA’s mission.
- Ensure adherence to CM’s standard operating procedures and high-quality patient care.
- Coach nursing staff on gentle, low-stress animal handling and effective client communication.
- Monitor compliance with DEA regulations and CM protocols for controlled drugs; maintain accurate drug logs.
- Ensure staff take mandatory rest and meal breaks and adhere to time and attendance guidelines.
- Training
- Train and onboard new nursing team members, including hands-on skills and weekly online modules.
- Monitor and assess trainees’ progress, providing developmental feedback and coaching.
- Assist in training rotating interns, residents, and veterinary/technical students through coaching and demonstration.
- People Management & Operations
- Serve on the CVC Leadership Team to support daily clinic goals.
- Foster a culture of kindness, respect, and teamwork through 1:1s, recognition, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Lead safety and security initiatives; report and address safety incidents.
- Assist with hiring, scheduling, and managing team time and attendance.
- Facilitate daily huddles and meet regularly with the CVC management team to provide feedback and solutions.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited school of veterinary science technology (2- or 4-year program) or equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department.
- Current New York State Veterinary Technician License.
- Minimum five years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in small animal medicine and surgery; shelter medicine or HQHVSN experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum two years of people management experience.
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with all staff levels.
- Desire to serve clients in a kind, helpful, and nonjudgmental manner.
- Strong interest in animal welfare and serving underserved communities.
- Excellent animal handling skills; ability to lift and carry 40+ pounds repeatedly with assistance.
- Ability to work standing for 8+ hours.
- Fear Free® Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to exemplify ASPCA’s core values and behavioral competencies.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in English (required); bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Pay
The target hiring range for this role is $44.24 - $46.64 per hour. Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, and market demands.
Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8-hour schedule with occasional flexibility to work beyond scheduled hours. This is an on-site position at the Community Veterinary Clinic.
