About the Role

The Surgical Medical Intensive Care Unit (SMICU) at St. Anthony Hospital is a specialized 12-bed ICU with 2:1 patient-to-nurse ratios. The SMICU plays a crucial role in the recovery and stabilization of critically ill patients recovering from general, thoracic, vascular, orthopedic, plastic, and oncological surgeries. It also specializes in the stabilization and treatment of complex medical patients recovering from DKA, post-cardiac arrest, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

As part of an achieved Magnet hospital, you will contribute to excellence in nursing practice, delivering high-quality patient care and outcomes. The role involves working with a diverse range of surgical and medical patients, requiring specialized care tailored to each patient’s needs.

Devices and equipment commonly used in the SMICU include chest tubes, abdominal drains, arterial lines, central lines, Vioptix, CRRT with Prismaflex, target temperature management with Artic Sun, and massive transfusion protocol using the Belmont.

Qualified external applicants with at least six months of direct RN experience are eligible for a $20,000 sign-on bonus. To qualify, you must be hired into a full-time or part-time position; PRN positions are not eligible. Some exclusions apply.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records, and clinical data.
• Evaluate patient’s response and intervene to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
• Develop and implement a patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrate competency in a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic interventions, including but not limited to IVs, incision/wound care, medication administration, catheterization, and specimen collections.
• Maintain thorough and confidential patient charts and records, documenting ongoing status, interventions, patient response, and outcomes accurately and timely.
• Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making.
• Promote, advocate, and collaborate to protect the health, safety, and rights of each patient.
• Provide patient/family education by assessing learning readiness, needs, and ability, and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching.

Requirements

• Active and unencumbered RN License in the state of employment.
• One (1) year of recent RN ICU experience.
• Associate’s Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma (required); Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred).

Physical Requirements: Medium work involving exerting/lifting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.

Schedule

Part-time nights: two (2) 12-hour shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM) every week.

Pay

Pay Range: $33.15 - $59.67 per hour.
