Schedule

About the Role
The Registered Nurse in the Med Surg Unit is accountable for the safe, individualized, efficient, and effective management and delivery of nursing care for hospitalized inpatients and hospital-based outpatients.
Responsibilities
- Perform duties per RN licensure, training, and scope of practice when floating to other areas of the medical center, following established floating guidelines
- Demonstrate critical thinking by synthesizing best practice protocols and standards with patient data to decide on the best course of action
- Identify and respond to changes in clinical condition, providing timely communication to the care team using SBAR format
- Include patient and significant others in the plan of care, addressing education needs from admission through discharge with complete and accurate documentation and appropriate interventions
- Actively participate in learning experiences for orientees, co-workers, and students as assigned
- Take ownership of professional development by staying current with professional practice standards and sharing new learning with peers
- Engage in organizational initiatives and department operations by attending required meetings and in-services
- Follow safe medication administration principles, including the five rights of medication administration and Avera MedSafe bar-coding
- Participate in quality improvement by adhering to best practice standards for Core Measures and Appropriate Care Interventions
- Coordinate care with providers across the continuum, not just the acute phase
- Ensure readiness for emergency situations, including appropriate use of Rapid Response procedures and fulfilling assigned code team roles
- Participate in the development of the hospital’s trauma program, following MDH Level III trauma designation guidelines
- Actively contribute to a committee or project improvement team that enhances patient experience, workflow efficiency, or employee satisfaction
- Serve as an EHR resource for physicians in assigned modules and attend required trainings
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds with the treatment team
Charge Nurse Responsibilities
- Begin each shift with an engaging Daily Line-Up, including discussion questions and concluding with prayer
- Support service excellence by ensuring completion of hourly rounding, consistent use of AIDET, and managing organizational goals
- Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care and making assignments
- Utilize critical thinking and the department staffing matrix to staff the unit appropriately
- Plan meal breaks, keep shift report focused and on time, minimize overtime, and ensure organized handoffs
- Investigate incidents, patient complaints, and care issues, reporting to nursing supervisor with suggestions for improvement
- Report all AHE and high-risk situations to department leadership immediately
- Ensure quality care delivery through regular interactions with Unit Charge RNs and as needed based on department activity
Requirements
- Ability to work the specified hours
- Visual acuity and communication skills adequate to perform position duties, including hearing, understanding, and distinguishing speech and other sounds
Qualifications
- Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification (CPI) within 180 days of hire
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
