Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Intermediate and ICU - Rotating - PRN

About the Unit

The MIICU is a progressively opening unit with flexible patient acuity ranging from Acute to Intensive Care. This unit proudly provides quality care to Internal Medicine patients with a variety of medical diagnoses including renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatology, infectious disease, endocrine, and gerontology. The team has been recognized by AACN as a Beacon Gold Unit for Excellence, achieved through collaborative practice, a highly satisfied workforce, and a healthy work environment supporting both novice and expert clinicians.

This 28-bed hybrid unit combines progressive and intensive care beds, focusing on a wide variety of adult medical patients across the full spectrum of their hospital admission. Primary admission diagnoses include respiratory failure, sepsis, multisystem organ failure, GI bleeds, DKA, and significant compromise of kidney and liver failure.

New employees receive formal training and competencies in both progressive and critical care nursing.

About the Role

The Clinical Nurse roles integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assisting the healthcare team with illness prevention, injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. Nurses deliver and document direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan, while safely administering prescribed medications and identifying incompatibilities or interactions.

• Clinical Nurse I: Provides direction, education, and begins acquiring leadership skills at the unit level.
• Clinical Nurse II: Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, recognizes changes in patient situations, intervenes appropriately, and mobilizes resources to meet individualized patient/family needs. Assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
• Clinical Nurse III: Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level, anticipates changes in patient situations, intervenes appropriately, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.

Requirements

Licensure, Certification, or Registration

• For Hire (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III): Current RN licensure in Virginia, eligible, or compact state.
• For Continued Employment (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III): Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.

Experience

• Required:
  • Clin I: N/A
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
• Preferred:
  • Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or as applicable to the area of practice.
  • Clin II, Clin III: Academic healthcare experience; experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting or as applicable to the area of practice.

Education/Training

• Required (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III): Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state’s Board of Nursing. RNs without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
• Preferred (Clin I, Clin II, Clin III): Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
• Preferred (Clin III): Certification in specialty area.

Responsibilities

• Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
• Practices within the boundaries of regulations governing nursing in Virginia, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing practice standards.
• Organizes work and delegates/supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
• Works all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotation and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may be adjusted as necessary.
• Serves age-specific groups as appropriate based on unit assignment.

Physical Requirements

• Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
• Activities: Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
• Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
• Emotional: Fast-paced environment, steady pace, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
