About the role

Under general supervision and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines, the Registered Nurse (RN) manages care delivery for patients throughout their length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by:

• Utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation
• Coordinating care provided by other professionals
• Delegating selected acts, tasks, or functions within the scope of professional nursing practice
• Providing selected aspects of physical care appropriate to the patient's acuity and complexity
• Documenting and communicating patient responses, resource consumption, and anticipated needs during each tour of duty

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in Nursing (required)
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire if not already held)
• Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
• BLS certification (required by completion of core orientation)
• Critical care or Advanced Life Support (ALS) certifications (unit-specific requirements may apply)
• Current driver's license in Michigan and proof of insurance (required for BAH)

Specialized Certifications

• Emergency Department (ED):
  • SALT triage, ESI Triage, and NIH Stroke Scale (within 90 days of hire)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC, required for full-time and part-time nurses within 6 months of hire)
• Special Care Unit: PALS certification (within 6 months of hire)
• Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby/Antepartum (BMH & BBC): Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (through PQF or NCC within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring)

Scrub RN Responsibilities

• Interprets procedure cards and assesses case carts for supplies
• Identifies missing equipment/supplies and arranges acquisition
• Anticipates physician needs based on operative procedure and preferences
• Monitors patient condition for overt changes indicating problems
• Evaluates and updates case information (e.g., preference cards, equipment status)
• Ensures proper use of equipment and instruments
• Anticipates needs of the operative field and surgical team
• Serves as a resource for circulators unfamiliar with specialty equipment
• Performs after-hour call duties on a rotational basis
• Performs scrub duties across multiple services (e.g., neuro, ortho, spinal fusions)

Additional Responsibilities

• HDU Department: Additional on-call requirements beyond regular scheduled hours
• Bronson Lakeview and South Haven Hospitals:
  • Completes annual Workday CBL on "Swing Beds" (understanding documentation and care differences for swing bed patients)
  • May cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview or South Haven based on patient acuity and staffing needs (for approved employees)

Virtual Registered Nurse (VRN) Role

• Leverages technology to deliver patient care remotely
• Collaborates with bedside staff and care teams to ensure quality outcomes and timely discharge
• Core responsibilities include:
  • Conducting admission screening, patient/family education, and discharge planning via secure digital platforms
  • Completing diagnostic testing questionnaires
  • Performing medication dual acknowledgments

Skills

• Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment
• Constant verbal, written, and electronic communication
• Ability to handle high levels of mental/visual fatigue (e.g., repetitive or detailed work requiring sustained concentration)
• Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds and assists with heavier tasks

Schedule

Full-time, 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
