About the Role

The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff.

The Registered Nurse maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards. The Registered Nurse assesses the patient utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes consistent with policy and appropriate to the patient’s condition, promoting, maintaining, and restoring physical and mental health while preventing illness.

The Registered Nurse interprets age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served, provides safe medication delivery, and ensures thorough, accurate reporting and documentation of patient symptoms, responses, and progress. The role also includes responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure.

All duties are performed in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes the nursing process—assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation—to formulate nursing interventions and develop individualized plans of care and treatment modalities.
• Identifies risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes, including discharge planning; prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes; evaluates intervention effectiveness; conducts ongoing patient assessments from admission to discharge; initiates crisis intervention as needed.
• Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; implements care plan interventions tailored to patient needs to progress toward wellness.
• Administers medications safely, provides medication education, and recognizes signs of adverse drug reactions.
• Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision-making and quality nursing care in psychiatric settings.
• Reviews, revises, and updates medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes; transcribes and implements physician orders; documents care, progress, and responses accurately.
• Follows up on client care responsibilities, communicates incomplete assignments, and ensures continuity of care.
• Implements staff assignments and delegates duties using sound judgment; advocates for patient needs and safety.
• Utilizes nursing knowledge to meet facility, patient, and staff needs; enhances evidence-based practice.
• Floats among various clinical services where qualified and competent; performs additional duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment (or valid Compact license).
• Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing.
• One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

• Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
• Strong oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
• Highly organized with sensitivity to culturally diverse and special-needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
• Understanding of normal physical and emotional development.
• Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
• Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
• Must complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

• Subject to frequent interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• 12-hour rotating shifts in a high-paced, potentially stressful atmosphere.
• Exposure to disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior.
• Spends approximately 90% or more of time indoors, with protection from weather but not necessarily temperature changes.
