The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff.

The Registered Nurse maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards. The Registered Nurse assesses the patient utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes consistent with policy and appropriate to the current client’s condition, promoting, maintaining, and restoring physical and mental health while preventing illness.

The Registered Nurse interprets age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served, provides for the safe delivery of medication, and is responsible for thorough, accurate reporting and documentation of the patient’s symptoms, responses, and progress.

The Registered Nurse assumes responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure. All duties are performed in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation to formulate nursing interventions directed toward an individualized plan of care and treatment modalities.
• Identifies risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes individualized to the client, including discharge planning; prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes; evaluates effectiveness of interventions; conducts ongoing assessment from admission to discharge; initiates medical/psychiatric crisis intervention.
• Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; implements nursing interventions identified in the plan of care tailored to patient needs.
• Administers medications as prescribed safely; provides education on prescribed medications; recognizes signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions.
• Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for decision-making, quality nursing care, and psychiatric nursing knowledge.
• Reviews, revises, and updates medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes; transcribes and implements physician’s orders; documents care, progress, and response to intervention accurately and concisely.
• Follows up on client care responsibilities, communicates incomplete assignments, and current client needs to staff to ensure continuity of care.
• Implements staff assignments and delegation of duties using appropriate judgment and knowledge; advocates for patient needs and safety.
• Utilizes nursing knowledge to meet the needs of the facility, patient population, and staff; enhances evidence-based practice.
• Floats among various clinical services where qualified and competent; performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment at an Oceans Healthcare hospital (Compact licenses acceptable).
• Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
• One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

• Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
• Effective oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers.
• Highly organized with an understanding and sensitivity to serve culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency).
• Basic knowledge of normal physical and emotional development.
• Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care.
• Self-confidence and conceptual thinking to lead and direct others.
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

• Subject to many interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
• 12-hour rotating shifts in a high-paced, potentially stressful atmosphere; must cope mentally and physically.
• May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior.
• Spends approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building protected from weather but not necessarily from temperature changes.
