Responsibilities
- Provides nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Directs and leads other assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide age/developmentally appropriate care.
- Provides patient-centered care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs.
- Counsels and educates patients and families on disease prevention, self-care, and treatment options.
- Documents care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain-of-custody considerations when applicable.
- Ensures a therapeutic environment and participates in professional governance and development.
- Delivers nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols.
- Responds promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.).
- Manages care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units.
- Collaborates with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintains awareness of the security environment.
- Maintains strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools.
- Ensures proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations.
Requirements
- Minimum one year of RN experience required.
- Licensure as an RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
- Current AHA BLS or Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
- RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years.
- Associate's Degree, and a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams.
- Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed.
- Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read medical charts, documents, and monitors.
- Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, as well as to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions.
- Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations.
- Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility.
- Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
