Department Overview

Children’s Minnesota has the largest Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Minnesota. The 30-bed PICU at the Minneapolis Campus features an interdisciplinary team of intensivists, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, social workers, and other professionals dedicated to advanced care for children with life-threatening critical diagnoses. The unit specializes in treating children with acute and chronic illnesses, including respiratory failure, neurological insults, complex post-operative recovery, severe infections, fluid imbalances, and multi-system organ failure.

Children’s Minneapolis is an ACS Level I trauma center, caring for children who have experienced traumatic events. Many patients require assisted ventilation, and the unit utilizes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) as needed. The team balances highly technical skills with a family-centered approach, emphasizing teamwork, open communication, learning, and professional growth.

About the Role

Coordinates and provides family-centered nursing care to infants, children, and adolescents, utilizing the nursing process. Accountable for professional practice, including independent nursing functions and delegated medical functions performed in collaboration with other health team members. This position may be scheduled at the Minneapolis (MPLS) and St. Paul (STP) campuses.

This is an MNA contract position.

Responsibilities

• Provide family-centered nursing care to pediatric patients in the PICU.
• Manage care for pre-operative and immediate post-operative PICU surgical patients.
• Care for Level I trauma patients (Minneapolis campus only).
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver advanced critical care.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current Minnesota RN licensure.
• Current BLS certification.
• Minimum of 1 year of PICU experience within the last 2 years, including the ability to care for critically ill pediatric patients.
• An informational meeting with the Patient Care Manager is required prior to awarding the position.
• Additional certifications may be required based on the unit; must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or obtained during orientation.

Pay

The posted salary represents a market-competitive range based on benchmark data for similar roles in the local or national market. Annual salaries are based on full-time employment (40 standard hours per week) and prorated for part-time positions. Individual pay rates consider market indicators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, internal equity, and organizational needs.

In addition to salary, this position may be eligible for medical, dental, vision, retirement, and other fringe benefits. Positions requiring night, weekend, or on-call work may be eligible for shift differentials or premium pay.
